Dumps Are Gone

Garbage dumps are a thing of the past.  There are tecnologies that deal with garbage in a more environmentally friendly way.

  1. An executive from the waste industry has said that there will be no more landfilling in ten years or less.

  2. Ten years??? That doesn't help us now.

  3. I agree, we are in a position where Waste Management of Canada wants to put a garbage dump in our community, a dump that will last 25+ years. If lanfilling will be no more in ten years or less, why is a garbage dump that will last 25+years, needed

  4. Here is the article that I was referring to in my first post.

  5. Once again we have gathered here to voice our concerns as to why the proposed rezoning of land owned by Waste Management should not be allowed. Siting a dump on this land in my opinion is not a good idea as the soil conditions are not what one would call ideal. Sand, gravel and rock, according to the testing that has been done, are definitely not suitable conditions upon which to site a dump. Contamination of groundwater is inevitable as liner failure will occur, this is a fact that has been found in numerous studies. Once contaminated, it will be impossible to resolve the problem.

According to the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act of Alberta, Section 2, subsection (a), which states, “the protection of the environment is essential to the integrity of ecosystems and human health and to the well being of society.” What good would there be in living unhealthily and in a poisoned environment? Oh wait a minute, could money be more important?

Further, Section 2, subsection (c , of the act states, “the principle of sustainable development, which ensures that the use of resources and the environment today does not impair prospects for their use by future generations.” How could future generations use this land when there would be a mountain of garbage on it and the water would be contaminated for many miles around this site?

Section 2, subsection (f), states, “the shared responsibility of all Alberta citizens for ensuring the protection, enhancement and wise use of the environment through individual actions.” It is everyone’s responsibility to protect the environment, I am doing my part by opposing this dump.

The fact that there is a rail line running very near the site of the proposed dump, plus the fact that there are rail sidings in Egremont, Thorhild, and Abee, should raise concern with the people living in these hamlets and in the immediate area. Do you want, who knows what kind of garbage , sitting in your hamlet for who knows how long? Also, according to WM documents, garbage trucks will be hauling garbage on Hwy. #18. Do you want garbage trucks going past your hamlet and past the school?

Councillors, you are our elected officials and you are working for us. You are not working for Waste Management and you are not working for your own personal gain.

I cannot understand how a company claiming to be concerned about the environment and the community could even consider siting a dump on this land. Oh wait a minute, could money and profits be what are more important than our health and well being? Garbage is big business and companies in the garbage industry intend to stay in business a long time and it is up to us to say enough is enough and we don’t want to be everyone’s dumping ground.

The effects of this dump have already affected our community, and it is not even in existence. It is hard to come into this hamlet to do any business without getting looks of resentment, and without hearing censorious comments made because of my opposition to this dump. Well, I am not going to change my views about this dump, and as for the looks and comments I get, if I come into the hamlet to do any business, I will not be intimidated by them.

I would like to thank the members of The Concerned Citizens of Thorhild County for the time, effort and determination that they have put into bringing forth their concerns about this dump project. I am indeed honoured and very proud to be associated with such a fine group of people.

I have lived in this county all of my life and it is a wonderful place to live. Beautiful lakes, parks and creeks, are some of the things that make this county a great place. In addition, pristine pasture and grainland abound. The residents of Thorhild County have put their blood, sweat and tears into their land, land that they love.

All of this is being threatened by a corporate giant breathing down our necks and ready to poison our land, all in the name of the mighty dollar. I think that a clean environment is worth fighting for.
